Most poker sites online will be offering something called a 'signup' or 'first deposit' bonus to new players. This is a common way for them to attract new players. The deal will be something along the lines of 'if you deposit up to $600, we will match it with the same amount'. It is very unusual to find a site that is not offering some kind of first incentive similar to this.

If you are a regular online poker player you are probably already aware of rakeback and similar style 'loyalty bonus' payments, but if you are new to this then here are the reasons why you need a deal from us.

 

Whatever level of poker you play, whether it's 1c/2c limit holdem or $50/$100 NoLimit, as you play each hand, if a flop is dealt, the poker site will take a small percentage, usually 5%. This is called the rake. Usually they cap the maximum amount from any one pot at $3. When you appreciate how many people are playing online poker, all these little 5% amounts add up to big profits for the poker sites. 'iPoker' network, for example, recently had a special promotion for it's players as it had dealt it's 1 BILLIONTH hand.

Now let's imagine you are playing a poker game online and you've won a pot and there was $10 in the pot. You don't get $10 back. you get $9.50. The site keeps the other 50c as its commission. This is the 'rake'. All the players that were involved in the hand are credited with having 'contributed' to that amount. If there were 10 players then your share was 1/10th of the 50c. (5c)
